Forests account for approximately 35% of Samoa's total area, and large areas are used for agriculture and logging. There are large coconut plantations in addition to banana, coffee and taro plantations. Papayas are also important in the Samoan diet. A few decades ago cocoa plantations were important, and Samoa produced some of the world's best quality cocoa beans.
Flowers and flowering plants and trees are abundant in Apia and in the villages.
